Learner Reflection

The Thinker-Robot

Due Dates: (throughout the semester)

One of the best ways to gain a deeper understanding of anything you are learning is by actively reflecting on it.  We will ask you to routinely apply and demonstrate metacognition (monitoring of one's own thinking processes).

How will you do this?
1. You should make a copy of this googledoc (under 'file', go to 'make a copy) and then give the link of YOUR NEW googledoc to your teacher here (link to googleform). This is so we can review your individual learner reflections.
2. You should add to your googledoc on a regular basis (included on our class schedule). If you cannot add something to one of the categories, that is ok. Fill in as you learn.
  • Each time you contribute a new reflection, copy the table and paste it to the top of your google form (so your newest entry is always the first on the page).
3. You will be asked to do a final self reflection (video) at the end of the course. More information about content and format will be given closer to the due date. Provide the link to your reflection video here.

Here are examples of reflection activities from past years:

Bear in mind that we have asked for students to reflect on their learning through different formats over the years. We have never used the formats (e.g. teacher portfolio; running dialogue) that we are requesting this year. These examples are simply to provide inspiration, not to serve as format models.

Optional reading & self-evaluation:

One of the most complete outlines of the competences that a foreign language teacher needs is the European Portfolio for Student Teachers of Languages. A reflection tool for language teacher education (EPOSTL). This EPOSTL is designed to help you establish a baseline of what you know, what you need to know, and can help you set your own learning goals and also serve as a benchmark for self-assessment of your own learning process.
