What is a data session? Data sessions are based on ethnographic techniques wherein a researcher shows data to other researchers in order to collectively explore and analyse the data together.

Data sessions are described by the American Sociological Association  Section on Ethnomethodology and Conversation Analysis (EMCA News, 2007, Summer) as a recognised method of data management in ethnographic/CA studies. Data sharing is an important element of networks of researchers in which audio and/or video data is presented for observation to a group of researchers several times for observation and discussion.  Observations about the data are shared, followed by discussion.

GREIP research centre members regularly meet for data sessions with data from our projects, MA dissertations or PhD theses. We try to open up the sessions to other researchers with similar research interests and theoretical backgrounds, upon request to attend. Attendance by anyone outside of the GREIP research team must be confirmed by email before the session.
